Good morning! I’m trying to overlook another gray day, reminding myself that it’s been dry lately and this week’s rain is needed. It’s true, but also…ugh. Yes, we are spoiled living in (usually) sunny Colorado.

Amidst the gray, let’s share some good news: we have gotten our hands on some Yecora Rojo again. Some of you are thinking, “Oh yeah, Yecora Rojo. I loved that bread!”, while the rest are wondering, “What is Yecora Rojo?” (This is along the lines of having a favorite heirloom tomato variety. Some people taste a difference, and some people just love tomatoes.) 

Yecora Rojo is a hard red wheat variety (Turkey Red, Red Fife, and Rouge de Bordeaux are some others we’ve featured). But Yecora Rojo is the only one we’ve had customers ask for by name. For a baker, it’s a wonderful variety to work with because the protein content is higher and it’s “thirsty” (meaning it absorbs a lot of water). As for flavor, there’s a depth to it that some wheats lack. I haven’t done a side-by-side taste test, but I think it’s fair to say that those who like our Spelt loaf will enjoy this one. We’ve also brought back the Yecora Rojo flour in case anyone wants to try baking with it.

On an unrelated note, a friend of mine (a bread friend, no less) found a little tea shop in Lafayette that we had lunch at last week. It’s called Day Day Up Tea. It’s a great place to share food and tea, and the atmosphere is a nice escape from the chaos of the day. I had the best oolong tea I’ve ever had. The owners went above and beyond for us, and that’s not something you always get. We both enjoyed the experience and thought we’d pass along the recommendation for this fellow Lafayette small business.
